Love of Reading
Reading for pleasure can support reading, and wider literacy, skills, wellbeing, empathy, confidence and aptitude for learning.
The National Literacy Trust's recent research showed that children and young people who enjoy reading, said it helps them to relax and feel happy. They also said it helps them to learn new things, understand the views of others, learn about other cultures and feel more confident.
However, the number of children in the UK reading for enjoyment is at an all-time low.
At the Federation of Bedenham and Holbrook Primary Schools, we are committed to supporting and empowering our children to read for pleasure and develop greater confidence in their reading skills.
Reading Ambassadors
We are proud to introduce our Reading Ambassadors for Bedenham and Holbrook. They are a team of enthusiastic pupils who help spread a love of reading across the school.
Reading Ambassadors lead on events such as National Poetry Day and Michael Rosen Day. They play a key part in special reading assemblies, look after our libraries, design reading competitions, and promote and run our lunchtime Reading Sheds.
They are a super bunch of enthusiastic pupils who like nothing better than cozying up and reading a book!
National Year of Reading 2026 - If you’re into it, read into it: Go All In.
Everyone knows the benefits of reading: it expands your world, sharpens your mind. It might even make you more creative or successful
But increasingly, fewer of us are making time to read. With so many forms of entertainment at our fingertips, reaching for a book can feel like a chore. Something we should do, but don’t really want to do.
The National Literacy Trust believes reading is a powerful plug-in to the things you already love – a great way to go deeper into your existing passions. Put simply we say: ‘if you’re into it, read into it’.
Click on the link to Go All in and see how reading in all its forms can unlock more of what you love – whether it’s music, baking, family time, films, sci-fi or… anything.
Whatever you're into. Get ready to GO ALL IN.

Reading Champions
Each half term, we celebrate our Champion Readers in a special assembly, with parents invited.
Champions Readers are children who have shown fantastic effort, enthusiasm and passion for reading.
They are awarded with a Golden Ticket - an invite to a special seasonal treat with Mrs Clark and Miss Davies, Heads of School. Ice lollies in the summer and hot chocolate in the winter are favourites! They also get to choose a brand-new book to keep from the Federated reading catalogue!
Parents, thank you for your support in helping us to grow passionate, lifelong readers.
Book Fairs
The Scholastic Travelling Book Fair visits both schools twice a year.
They help to bring children and books together, delivering Book Fairs – pop-up bookshops – to thousands of schools in the UK every year. Every Book Fair showcases the very best books to engage every type of reader, and every book sold can help to earn free books for your school libraries!
Check the calendar and come along to our next Travelling Book Fair!
Sharing a book with a child is fun! It’s a time for closeness, laughing and talking together – and it can also give children a flying start in life and help them become lifelong readers.
